Holiday Traditions

Tradition means: an inherited, established or customary pattern of thought, action or behavior; the handing down of information, beliefs and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another without written instruction.
Some of my personal holiday traditions are putting up and decorating our tree the weekend after Thanksgiving, sending out my yearly holiday cards the following week, watching Chrismtas movies, listening to holiday music, driving around looking at the beautiful light displays, playing board games or cards, our annual Christmas Eve bonfire, eating wonderful, traditional foods, and most of all….being with family.
Being around and spending quality time with our loved ones is soothing to the soul. We love each other, have a history together, and look forward to the future sharing the same goals and dreams. Sure there are and will be life’s usual ups and downs, but by being with each other during the holidays somehow gets us over those hurdles throughout the rest of the year.
Most holiday traditions that we celebrate were passed down to us from our elder relatives. Some, however, are those that we started ourselves. Ones that are most special and meaningful to our own little families.
And maybe one day, when our children are grown and out on their own, they’ll continue some of these traditions within their home too and start their own traditions as well. A fresh start, a clean slate, a new beginning; as bright as the Christmas Star.
